japanese honeysuckle problem

I planted a japanese honeysuckle a couple of years ago and it was growing well, but recently I have seen many of the branches and leaves near the lower part of the bush have gone brown and appear dying or dead, but the leaves and branches of the upper part of the bush seem fine and are flowering and growing. I am not an expert gardener by the way

How are you growing this plant? Is it over a pergola, a wall, scrambling over something? Is it in the ground? If so, make sure the ground is cool and not too exposed to the elements. Soil should be mulched every spring time. If it is in some pot, make sure it is watered heavily and the pot is large enough for the shrub. It's been very hot and many young plants have been suffering. This honeysuckle actually prefers to be more left to scramble and have less sun on it. If it's in a pot, maybe move it somewhere shadier for it to cope. Lower leaves dying or going tatty are common on many plants.
