dying clematis

Why does my clematis in a pot against my garage wall initially thrive and then the leaves go brown and it dies?

Hi Sally. Most Clematis do not like growing in pots although there are some that will. What Clematis are you growing? The pot should be at least 18 inches in diameter and depth. Clematis like their heads in the sun and their roots in the shade so your garage wall orientation is important. They should be planted deeper than they are in the pot they come in.

We have several clematis in pots, they are not doing so well this year & I think it is entirely due to the exceptional hot weather we are having in the south east this summer.  In previous years they have performed wonderfully. Ours are all in large pots.
