Plant id please

This was given to me by a Spanish lady, she says it grows outdoors in Spain. The flowers don't open, at least mine haven't and I think have a faint fragrance in the evening. I wondered if it might be a Nicotiana of some sort.

I think it is Mirabilis jalapa

The flowers open in the morning and shut in the afternoon.

Oooh yes Fidget, looks very much like Mirabilis, well done. image T'internet says the flowers open in the afternoon in sunshine. Is that your understanding? Maybe it has not been sunny enough in the past few days that I have had the plant? image

that's what the internet says, it is is oft repeated. I have found what Fidget has found. I wonder if it's about the time zones they come from and where they find themselves growing. One of the common names is Four o'clock flower, they should obey the rules.

Much of what you read on the internet and in books has been copied from the same place. If the original info is wrong, on it goes

Makes sense. I think I must be in the Twilight Zone then, my flowers have yet to open at all. image

    Thanks Fidget and Nut.

Interestingly (to me anyway) the first time I grew these, about 30 years ago, they did what it says in the books.
