Blasted cabbage whites!

image

This is my first attempt at growing veg - As you can see, caterpillars have moved in and laid waste to my cauliflowers (just as the flower is forming!)

ive been out and removed eggs and caterpillars from the leaves but they are all looking a bit Swiss cheesy now. How do I deal with the plants now?

1) prune the worst leaves and clean up as best I can.

2) compost fodder! get rid, can't be saved now!

3) leave them alone for nature to take its course?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Without the outer leaves I doubt it'll grow anyway so you've nothing to lose by just leaving them.  If you have one, a fine net is useful for covering cabbages to keep off any [more] unwanted visitors.

Brassicas cannot be grown in our garden without being netted from day one, and with netting it is easier to lay slug pellets to stop the other pest.

Don't give up growing brassicas, we have had a fine crop of Greyhound cabbage just a couple left, and sprouts growing under netting, no hardship.

  • I'll leave them this year for now, see what happens and I'll be ready with betting next year! Thanks again all!

  • I've got frogs and a hedgehog so I would like to resist slug pellets if at all possible!

This has a handy lifecycle illustration that lets you know when the butterfly is liable to be targeting your cabbages. https://butterfly-conservation.org/butterflies/large-white

Blue water pipe on a roll from builders merchants and scaffolding netting, and some tent pegs. can get from eBay. Works fine but don’t let it touch the veg or she will land and lay through the netting.
