Damaged Hornbeam Hedge
My pleached hornbeam hedge has been "hacked at" by an over zealous garden contractor (there is social housing behind my house whose owners employ a contractor to maintain their properties). Aside from the argument I will be having with them about possible criminal damage - I am more concerned that the hacking into fairly old wood on part of the hedge will mean that that part might never grow back and it will be left with a "hole" for ever more. Does anyone have any reassurance that this damage will repair, or should I be looking to recover damages for a plant that has been irretrievably damaged? The cost of the pre-pleached tree was about £750. Thankfully I managed to stop them from doing any further damage to the rest of the hedge - but I am still concerned. Thanks in advance.

Doesn't sound like there will be major issues for you, but it's best to get a picture to see. Pruning at these times are fine for Hornbeam, and will allow your shrub better chances of recovery. If it's through to older wood, it might be unsightly for a while.
