I thought I would revive this old thread to see what others are experiencing this year. The very mild dry spring here has brought a lot of things on even earlier than before. In the ornamental garden we had flag Iris come & go in March, the "winter" flowering Daphne is flowering again now, many other things have come earlier than normal. On the Allotment the Plum & blackberry are even earlier than ever, the plums are nearly finished already, the blackberry was in full flower in May, I picked a few about 10 days ago but today I picked a full punnets worth. I have found it harder than ever to keep a succession with some crops, Broad beans, peas & radish are examples,  even sowing at intervals things are catching up or going over faster than before so it is glut or dearth. Oddly the one crop which I would like to be a bit earlier is Tomatoes, but they are resolutely green as grass- can't win!

  • Well here we are again,  others must be experiencing these oddities as well but these are my latest.  White Agapanthus on the patio with 5 flower heads. On the Allotment I still have tomatoes in the  greenhouse.  My  Ribston pipin apple had several flowers a month ago and some have set. Now one BlackBerry branch has budded up  and looks set to flower.  All quite mad for the time of year & now they are forecasting that England will stop having any snow except for the highest levels.

The apples are tiny  pic is deceptive

Weather the same here except a bit colder,  the frost and ice hasn’t gone for about 3 days, the snow on the Moors has finally disappeared today but it’s still mighty cold.

  • @philippasmith2 : Bad luck with the 'poorly' boiler - time to dress up like Nanook of the North aka Michelin Man (showing my age here...!). Multiple/ extra layers, esp on the head will help conserve body heat. Spring is on the way, fairly soon, I hope!!

How about a wet mossy slope - the increased rainfall may do the trick.

We can oblige there Philippa 😀

  • @Lyn we have had frost but none that's not melted by 10 or 11 in the morning, not hard enough to freeze the ground. I accept I am on the fringes of London (just inside M25) but parts of our site are quite exposed.  The sap is clearly still in the Apple tree or the fruits would not have set. I expect them to fall off before the end of winter though.

  • This year in particular in have noticed a few variances in my garden which I have never known before.

My apple tree started flowering at the end of September. It was only a few flowers but I have never known that before.

A Dahlia grew its leaves as normal but did not flower until mid October. It has been flowering since quite happily  until our first frost this week. It is one of 2 dahlias that I forgot about 2 or 3 years ago and did not dig up. The following year they bloomed marvellously so have just left them ever since. Whether this one was rebelling this year I am not sure as it was  not lifted.

I have some nasturtiums which are still flowering quite happily and there seems to be  no sign of it slowing down, there are new buds waiting to open.

In South Wales our roses still flowering, the mahonia coming into flower, and we noticed when walking at the nature reserve, blackberries turned nicely black, didn't try to see if edible, expect they were.
