Mulberry question

What sort of mulberry is this, please?

Have had the tree for about 20 years - it's a large spreading shape and about 35 feet tall.

Every year it forms an amazing crop of berries, but I have NEVER once beaten the birds to it.

as soon as the berries get a slight pink tinge they are scoffed. The birds don't leave any for me. I have decorated the lower branches of the tree with dvds and Christmas tinsel, but it does not scare them off.

Can I pick them in this white, un ripe state and do anything with them or am I doomed to never use a single mulberry?

Photos will be added later when uploading problem is solved.

    Thanks Pansy

i don't think the investment in sleeves would be worthwhile given the low density of fruit per branch.

I was hoping that some clever person would tell me that I could do something with the inripe berries - like pickle them or turn them into chutney.

as you said, they'd have no taste whatsoever for jam.

    thanks for the reply.
