Giving the nest a good drenching with water usually helps disperse them annmarie.  Where are you finding them, in pots or the garden?

ants are part of life. The trick is to learn to live with them and the rest of nature.

stop a moment and think what harm the numerous powders are doing to insects in you garden and to the birds that live on insects.

Ants are mainly interested in sugary foods.
If you've got lots in the house, that's one thing, but they do no harm to plant roots.
Like nut I let them get on with their lives in peace - mainly, except my dog lays on the patio licking up each ant as it passes image

  • Nematodes work quite well in the garden to shift them and they don't kill them (no use in the house, of course!). Like nut and Pete I just leave mine, not least because I have green woodpeckers which come to eat them. Sometimes I think that my garden is just one large ants' nest!

I don't tend to get them in the house only if the dogs bring them in on their coats , its normally where ever I do weeding and on the lawn , I cant sit on the grass as I,l get bitten by them and boy it isn't half itchy when that  happens ...

Are they in the house or outside?

We have an agreement. Any ants that go in the pots or in the house die. Anywhere else, they can get on with their lives. I have a few nests dotted about. They are fascinating creatures. It's a good job they're so small or we'd be in real troubleimage

Water is the solution, they hate damp areas for nesting.

I  remember many years ago, their was an ants' nest in the middle of the lawn so I hosed it. There was a big puddle of water and I saw the ants rescuing the eggs. I felt like a murderer so I put a lollystick as a bridge so they could get out. -what a softy!
