Penstemon grown really big

imageimage

This penstemon  has grown really big. It's Raven and I wish I'd bought Garnet. Anyway I only bought it last year and it had only 3 stems. As a result gladioli I planted are being overcrowded by it. Shall I dig out and move the gladioli - about 2-3 mainly which are growing behind and within the penstemon?

Or cut back the penstemon? Not sure what to do. Any advice mch appreciated.

Personally , I would transplant the gladioli to a sunnier place . Penstemons are often left un-pruned until the Spring , by which time your gladioli will have probably been shaded out .

(PS nice colour by the way )!

Thanks Paul B3. Can I transplant the gladioli now? I tried that with one a couple of months ago and it took ages to recover. I also had the same issue with some irises behind crocosmia, but no one on the forum was able to advise about them.

Thanks. well I feel the purple colour gets a bit lost against the cedar fence (which I want to paint green at some point). But glad someone likes it.

It's a 50/50 on the gladioli I'm afraid ; I would carefully pot them up and keep aside for next -year . You may be lucky to get them flowering this year , but if not at least the bulbs/corms will be in a safe place and not get forgotten about if you transplant them now .

Leave them until winter. The gladioli flowers will form a tall spike at the back of the border. Move them now and you will probably lose them.

Hmm. I didn't see your reply fidgetbones and I moved them yesterday. As yet they have transplanted okay. I hope they flower!
