celery - what's happening?

Never grown celery before, I was given a plant and put it in the corner of a new raised bed. Today I noticed 3 smaller celery plants a few inches away. Does this mean there were ungerminated seeds in the pot when I planted the large one? They don't send out any kind of runners do they?
I now feel a bit silly asking this question!
