Berberis

Thank you for information on berberis roots . I have decided to cut the oldest down to the ground. Then use root killer . Do you think this will work?

  • Roots killer will do what it suggests but the stump and roots will remain in the soil. They will rot away eventually but it'll take many years for them to degrade completely.

Personally, I'd buy a cheap trench shovel and use it to chop the thickest roots around the base of the stump and deep taproots under it and pry the stump out. Use a garden fork to lift out to side roots. It's incredibly unlikely the berberis (or most trees/shrubs that don't send out creeping rhizomes) will make a comeback.
