Hi I need some advice on what to plant on my south facing wall it currently has ivy growing.I like me the ivy but it's not got any flowers I would like something to replace it that is scented, quic growing and long lasting. The wall is around 1metre tall by 3 metre wide so it will need to fit into these conditions any ideas....???

Most climbers are quite vigorous plants and would soon outgrow that space. Why not keep the ivy as a backdrop, and plant something flowery in front of it, or grow something like a patio clematis up it, which would not be strong enough on its own to cover the wall. Or you could ring the changes with annual climbers  like Mina lobata,  shorter sweet peas such as Jet Set, canary creeper or morning glories, which will hang on to the ivy but die at the first frost.

I think all that ivy needs is a close haircut ... it'll rejuvenate and you'll get a covering of fresh new leaves.

Ivy is such a good plant for wildlife and if you manage it well it's great in most gardens.

It's boring want more colour and scent really considering chopping the ivy down and putting maybe a climbing Rose or something like that ? Honeysuckle or hardy jasmine???

I get what you're saying image  but a rose only gives colour for a couple of months a year ... the rest of the time all you'll see is wall and bare stems ..........  for me it would depend on how much I looked at that wall in the rest of the year ...  what about something colourful in containers in front of the wall for the summer?

Which way does it face?  How much sun does it get?

You could have some pots with species tulips in for the spring, and then swap them for pots of colourful summer bedding.
