What is this vegetable?

Hello.

I am a very novice gardener and we tend to plant things and just guess and wing it. We have this vegetable that has grown but we're not sure what it is. I have enclosed a photo. It's hanging as we've trailed it up and along but it's so big that maybe it should be on the ground?

Thanks very much.

Oh dear ... there's a glitch on the forum at the moment preventing the uploading of pictures ... it is being tackled by the Tech Team ... hopefully they'll sort it before long ...

Here it is. It looks like a huge courgette but we grow courgettes and we've not knowingly planted any round courgettes (if such thing exists).

    Any ideas??

    Thank you.

Looks like some kind of squash to me. I have no idea what variety, or how to tell if it's ripe.

Agree, a squash of some kind and it will need some support before long or it will bring the rest of the vine down.  Some folk use old ladies tights to support them when these types of plants are allowed to climb.  They change colour when ripe (the squash, not the tights!) image

There are several types of round courgette grown nowadays ... here's just one example

They taste just the same as ordinary courgettes.   My guess is that in the seed packing process a round courgette seed managed to get into the wrong packet.

As yours has grown quite a bit I think you've probably got a round marrow now image

    Looks like a green pumpkin.

  • I love the tights suggestion.

Thanks for your thoughts. I think a wrong seed must have definitely slipped in somewhere. Oh well it's good for us to have a surprise.

    Thanks again everyone.

    Hi all

Does look like a courgette family member however at least it can be part of your lunch or dinner

It does resemble a round courgette, I am growing three types this year Floridor yellow, zuchini green and tondo green round all of which are nice used over a range of meals

    Happy gardening
