How far are you from the nearest access point as thief's are also lazy. They must be very determined if they want to negotiate that ditch and then carry out what they want through the ditch again and then walk with it some distance to a vehicle.
Have you considered a decent HD CCTV system.
Bolt cutters and a walk of an unknown distance, negotiate a ditch full of water then carry out everything back the same way too. I would perhaps re think if I lived more than 500yrds from the nearest pedestrian access point. Your absolutely right though to give your potential problem some thought.
Have you thought about talking to the crime prevention service or finding some other residents elsewhere that have gardens backing onto a footpath / railway and having a word about there own experiences.
I would of thought that anti social behaviour and poo bags being thrown into the garden from the footpath would of been a far greater issue if your garden is within 1/2 mile of the nearest access point to the line.
It might not be long before your ditch is too dangerous to traverse having being filled with shopping trolleys, abandoned bikes and furniture.
Does the ditch extend beyond 2 or even three other properties either side of you? Can someone get into a neighbours garden then into yours, if so are you wasting your time and money unless you all do the same thing along the ditch?
