Help - is this a knotweed?

found this in the corner of the garden and wondered if it is a kind of knotweed? It is about 3m tall but the leaves are only 3 inches. No flowers.

Oh dear no pictures - will try again.
Are the plants climbers i.e. suckering around other plants or onto fencing - or do they have single upright stems?
What colour are the stems... are they smooth with a red, speckled appearance?
Are the leaves up the stems opposite each other or staggered down the stems?
