First Home - Help!!! :-)
in Plants
Good evening,
My partner and I bought our first home, ex council authority, ugly outside but ... with big potential inside.
We are nervous and excited at the same time. We should be getting the keys next week.
The house has huge windows which are overlooked by anybody walking along the path where the photo was taken from.
We are considering to plant a few trees at the bottom on the back of our bottom fence to give us some privacy,
I would like to know your opinion and get as many ideas and advises as you can give me.

Silver Birches are great shade/cover trees and grow rather fast.
Thank you for your reply Dave.
I've had a look online and these are lovely tree but I think they are too large.
I like the privacy but I don't want to have too much shadow and I don't want to cause any argument with my neighbour or council (the trees would be planted outside my boundary)
The idea would be to plant 2 discreet trees no more than 2 meters high which would grow to a maximum of 5-6 meters high and leaves that allow light through if possible.
Hopefully anybody could come with any other suggestion.
Thank you,
Daniel
Why not plant two evergreen laurels ? When larger , keep the trunks free of foliage , but leave the growth above your hedge to a manageable height by judicious pruning , but to maintain a modicum of privacy .
Any deciduous tree will leave you exposed during winter , but evergreens will cast shade ; a case of a 'choice between two-evils ' I'm afraid .
I hope this doesn't sound facetious, but wouldn't net curtains be a lot easier? You wouldn't have to wait for them to grow.
We would like the house to look modern inside and net curtains make everything look a bit dated.
Also I like the idea of looking through the window nice trees instead of people walking along.
How could we attach trellis to the top of the fence?
rowan work well, flowers in spring, berry's and autumn leaf colour in autumn, silver birch grow quickly as well - nice stems in winter.
remember you have to plant inside your boundary, as tempting as it is to plant in the grass outside your fence it's not your land.
What about Griselinia Littorals? They are a gorgeous apple green with light edges to the leaves, so you get a gorgeous effect when the wind ruffles them. They grow super fast and are ideal as screening. If you don't want to wait for them to grow (though you wouldn't have to wait long!) you can buy them already at about 6ft high for a decent price.
I love a practical "gardener"!
