Plastic compost bin

Hi, I bought a regular plastic compost bin, with a little door at the bottom, last year.  This Spring I thought I'd get some of the compost to put into the garden, unfortunately, I could only retrieve the lovely brown stuff, up to my elbow length, as the bin was stuck in situ.  I left it until now, and just kept adding to it.

It is now full, I need to empty it in order to reach the compost further down.  I have pallets, so was wondering if I could use my garden wall as one side, and the other three sides would be pallets.  I would be lining it with tarpaulin.

Also, is it ok to make compost heaps in shade?  As I have a shady part of the garden I could use to make possible two, from pallets, assuming I can use the dividing wall between myself and my neighbour.

I hope the above makes sense, any help/suggestions would be great.

Thanks.

That's a great idea, you need two, one to add fresh stuff to, then when it's nearly full, turn it into the other one, keep it forked over a bit, that will let air in and rats out, when the second one is is ready you can store it in the black plastic one, when you need that again for storing, shovel it into compost bags and keep somewhere out of the way.

Its a good idea to put a close mesh chicken wire on the ground first, that stops burrowing rodents.

Have you got some old carpet to use as a lid, it will get much warmer then.

Ignore the little door at the bottom of your compost bin. I leave my bins until everything has rotted down nicely then I pull the bin over and have an easily accessed mound of compost. I work on a three bin system and once the third bin is full, the first one is ready to empty.

Brilliant, thanks for the advice.  First time trying to make compost, absolutely delighted with it, but I now realise having one bin is no good.
