Acer - white blobs
Hi,
The leaves of my 25 yr old Acer Palmatum are curling up and falling off.
The trunk and branches have many tiny white blobs. Some of these have brown caps on them.
On one branch there was a brown insect with black edging and black lines on its back.
I have four other acers in the same condition.
Can anyone help please?

scale insects probably
It looks as if your Acer is suffering from horse chestnut scale. This is caused by a little insect that feeds on sap. It shouldn't cause any lasting damage to your trees.
Snap musher.

Agree with musher and ladybird, scale insects. The white stuff is them laying eggs. I've had them on my acer, I wipe them off and squish them using tissue.
The orange and black bug in the last photo is a baby ladybird ?
I had a very bad infestation on one of my acers a few years ago.
I used an old shoe brush to brush them off the big branches, then in winter I used Vitax Winter Tree Wash sprayed all over and since then there's not a sign of them

You are right DHR, we do all make our own choices, it is just that sometimes others have to live with the choices we have made.
