Ants in my banana plant

Hi GWers,

my banana plant, planted in a decent spot in the garden (south facing, neutral soil) it seems to be struggling in so much as the leaves look unhealthy, brown spots, irregular shape, crinkly edges.

Upon closer inspection, I can see there are a dozen or so ants rummaging about inside the very centre of the plant.

a) what are they doing there?

b) are they damaging the plant?

c) if they are, how do I get rid of them?

I'm all ears!

Hi Matty - ants like to farm aphids for their honeydew secretions, so it may be those aphids that are causing some issues. Has the banana got good rich moist soil to grow in? If it's undernourished and/or weak, it makes it more susceptible to pests and diseases. A good jet from a hose will clear the greenfly if there's any there though.

Other weather conditions could also be a factor - drying winds on soft new growth, for instance. If you have a photo, that will also help with other advice image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
