You posted that at the same time as me Sam. Gosh - that's a huge area to have cleared. I think it's going to be tricky to get a lawn established.
Think you may need that brushwood killer that many people use, but you'll need to apply regularly and as soon as there's enough new growth for it to work. Can you take a few close ups of the weeds? If you can show leaves and stems that will help for an ID, and therefore how best to tackle clearing it.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hi Sam - Yes the Rosate36 killed the lot. It has to be used during the spring/summer while the weeds are growing. I found it very effective as you can see. I took me 3 sprayings over about 6 weeks, I then left it all for a couple of months then raked and burned it all. Then it got expensive

Take note of what's been said above Sam. Trying to grow grass in the shade of a big thirsty tree is going to be a struggle. Make use of the tree and grow spring flowering woodland plants underneath Take you time in planning. I planned for nearly a year before I got to where I was satisfied with my plans. Gardens take years to take shape - don't rush and be patient - and good luck!

Sam
I don't want to be negative, but with all that tree cover, it will be very hard to establish a lawn.
