Planning ahead

This year I am planning on growing some veg from autumn onwards. I have a raised bed and greenhouse to use. Any recommendations on what is best to grow as this will be my first time growing over winter?

Firstly; consider what you eat! Don't grow something if you won't eat it.

In the autumn I'll be putting in my

    garlic

    onions

    cut and come again spinach

    peas

    asparagus

In the greenhouse I'm going to try winter salad. I've been told you can try carrots too but dobt have much experience of that and of course need the greenhouse clear for spring.

I sow broad beans ... variety Aquadulce 'Claudia' in the garden in late October ... they cope with all the weather than the winter can throw at them, and we start harvesting beans in late May ... way before the blackfly that plague later sown beans arrive.  We always have a great crop.

I will be sowing Spring cabbage at the end of July to grow in the greenhouse when the tomatoes are finished.

Japanese Onions planted as sets in polystyrene tubs (Grocers Broccoli Boxes ideal) guaranteed success overwintered in greenhouse. Best onions that I have ever grown - Harvested without transplanting at all end May beginning June -Also can be topped for salads and lifted as Spring Onions if you have too many. I got 30 to a box. You can grow them outside but you would need to cover them with straw in the Winter.

I still it too late to start those onions off as seeds?

I am useless when it comes to growing onions from seed, and I have always found Japanese Onion Sets in UK from September onwards. Normal Onion sets don't seem to like me either , but I can vouch for the Japanese ones. You can never have enough of them. In France they say don't water Onions after the Longest Day as they will not swell anymore. Don't know if this saying is in the UK as well.
