black bugs eating roses
i'm after some advise, i was given a selection of beautiful david austin roses for my birthday. planted them two days ago following all the instructions. now they are covered in small black insects that look like they are eating the flowers. no idea what they are or how to deal with them. please help! thank you

Do you have a picture? Sounds like black fly, they will do no harm just blast them off with a hose or squish with fingers (or gloves)
They look like harmless Flower Beetles to me
some of the petals have holes in, would flower beetles eat the petals? should i just leave them alone.

Yes pollen beetles, one of the good guys. Holes in the flowers are more likely earwigs.
