Cherry Tree Pruning in May 2016

image

I pruned my Cherry tree last year in May. As can be seen in the pictures I had prune only one third of branches which were very high. But this year only few were green while most of it had no leaves or fruit this year otherwise it used to yield so much fruit that I used to distribute it to my neighbors. What should I do now?

Is there anyone to advise me? should I cut those branches which are not alive anymore? will it kill my tree?
  • Hiya I am no expert but I do believe you’re not supposed to cut the tree in May and should have waited until it was Dormat meaning when all the leaves have fallen off in autumn around October/November time.
It might take a year or two for your tree to recover back. But then I could be wrong.

With these trees, you can prune them in the summer or late summer time. The picture I assume was taken roughly one year after you pruned it back by 1/3? Were you just trying to control its size?

I think it might be a good idea to take another recent photo of your tree now. It's not unusual to see less leaves and obviously no fruit. But, to say 'not alive' branches, I think we need to see the state of the tree branches.

Thanks, Below is the recent photo. As it can be seen that only couple of branches has any growth all other are not having any growth at all. I am thinking to cut of all those branches to stimulate new shoot if possible but I am afraid that by doing so I may not kill the tree.

Shmonver, it's clear that some branches are possibly dead, but did you inspect all the branches as I suggested on my last post? Have you seen any large tears/rips or holes or even weeping on any part of the branches including the main trunk? You can of course prune away areas that are no longer living, but, there may be an underlying issue with the whole tree to have a large portion of the tree not come back to life.
