could anyone tell me what these are that are growing on my potatoe plants

seed pods, fruits. All plants flower and make seeds (unless very interfered with by man)
You can see the resemblance to tomatoes, a relative. But I think you shouldn't eat those, many of this family have poisonous bits

Definitely don't eat them. I take the flowers off, I want the plants putting their energy into tubers not fruit and seeds.
They are toxic - best removed if you have children, certaiinly.
