  Can't you ask the 'someone' what it is? Let it flower and see whether you like it or not - whatever it is.

  Resembles a Hedychium spp. ; if you've a greenhouse , place in it and water/feed well ; the flowers will indicate its ID . If a member of the ginger family (Zingiberacae) , they normally flower late summer in UK .See what happens .
