Thank you everyone, now to make the decision to cut back or not!

I have it self seeding between concrete paviours on our drive and I'd love to see someone "dig" them out.

Glyphosate is fine if used as instructed. The problem is SOME, and I repeat" SOME" farmers have used  it to desiccate food crops before harvesting.

No gardener I know would ever spray glyphosate on a food crop.

The irony is, if it is "banned", farmers, highways agencies  and local authorities will be exempt from the "ban"

    Devon.

I'm amazed that you would use Glyphosate on such a lovely plant as Alchemillia mollis.image

I've had quite a few specimens of this plant in my garden for years and have never ever witnessed it growing where I don't want it to.

And may I add --- once more --- that Glyphosate is a dangerous product which out to be (and hopefully will soon be) banned from our gardens?

  • I, too have this lovely plant in my garden and I pent most of yesterday morning pulling it out... it self seeds mercilessly and has now become a plant that I need to get rid of. Any ideas as to what to use, without harming the plants around them? I’m unable to dig it out without hurting other plants...

I’m surprised that so many people on here use glyphosate, and so often!  I stopped using it a few years ago, and that’s not been a problem.   For something like lady’s mantle - if I couldn’t dig it out I’d put a kettle of boiling water on it, and then a day or so later it should be much easier.

You have to remove the flowers before they set seed. That's the easiest way to keep it in check, as even a tiny plant has a long root.
You can use a weedkiller painted on the leaves. Do it on a still day so that it doesn't touch other plants. Easiest to use is Resolva 24 hour, which you can spray directly and accurately into the foot of the plant, and it works overnight. If you wait until it's starting to get dark, there's not the number of bees and insects around either.

I've never had problem with it but it pops up everywhere in mum's garden. Quite hard to deal with when it comes up through the middle of other plants. I never had a problem with Verbena until last year and now it's a bit of a pest in my garden so perhaps my Alchemilla woes lie ahead of me

Alchemilla mollis self seeds everywhere in my garden, despite me being quite ruthless in cutting back the flowers once they are over. But it is a good 'weed' to have!

I have half a dozen of them in my garden and so far non have self seeded.  Some have been in for about 3 years.  (I bet I have hundreds of them next year after posting this).
