Three clematis to identify

Hi

The three clematis all flowered from early June, but we are in Aberdeenshire so a bit behind everyone else

We don't have the labels so I'm basing my pruning on flowering time but any identification would be helpful please

This first one suffers from persistent snails as you can see, but it has a lot of bare stems up to about this feet or so and I think now is the  time to cut it back quite hard to promote lower growth next year

This one had one flower last year as I got the pruning wrong so I think might a small trim is appropriate once the flowers are done

This one was last to flower and again has bare lower stems, plus we need to paint the railings so i am looking to cut it down quite a bit after flowering

Thought welcome thanks

No longer newish but can't think of a new name so will remain forever newish.  B)

The first one looks like 'The President', although there are many similar ones.  Group 2 for pruning.  The 2nd is almost certainly 'Nelly Moser', also group 2.  The 3rd one is probably a group 3 so can be cut back almost to the ground in spring.  Clematis pruning groups:

IMHO The President is a much darker blue/ purple colour.

As is Dr. Ruppel.  Main thing is to identify the pruning groups, Hosta as Stephanie has the secateurs in hand by the sound of it!  No. 3 might also be a group 2.

  • Possibly  H F Young, Nelly Moser, Warsaw Nike ?   Difficult to photograph clematis colours accurately.

Number 3 could be Clematis viticella 'Etoile Violette'?  which is group 3

  • Thanks all, this is proving interesting! As Bob says, the grouping for pruning is the main thing for me, and the secateurs are ready for the first plant as it has finished flowering. I'm keen to either think about re-shaping it if now is a good time, or to at least dead head the furry middles if I might get another flush of flowers.

I've been trying to remember the name Nelly Moser so i have a feeling number two could be that but I don't think we ever knew what the darker one is.

I promise to only get pruning when appropriate, honest!

  • In my opinion, you can prune them all in February, treat them as Group 3, and they will then flower later on new wood, with smaller flowers, OR, don't prune them, treat them as Group 2, and they will all flower on old wood with larger flowers.   I am saying that these Groups 1,2, 3 ( or A,B,C ) are man made, the plants are pruned to suit the gardener, not the plant.   Just my opinion, shoot me down !!
