Ribes speciosum dying??

Hi everyone

I have a ribes speciosum growing on my kitchen wall. It has always seemed very happy there, and flowered beautifully this year, but now it seems to be dying limb by limb.

I've removed a couple of stems to ground level on which all the foliage had died but now leaves on other stems are also turning brown.

What could be the problem, and is there anything I could do to save it?

Thanks!image

Just done a little research myself online - I'm afraid it may be honey fungus. A rose nearby is also dying limb by limb.

Guess it's game over for both of them if it is the case??

It could be, but it wouldn't hurt to give them both a really good watering. They're against a wall and it has been a very dry year..... fingers crossed?

  • I know this was quite a while ago but I thought I'd add to the thread rather than start a new one.  My Ribes has just suddenly died, it flowered as usual and then the berries appeared and now it's dead!  After lopping a few branches off to see if there's any life left, there wasn't, but we discovered that the very centre of the stem is dark.  No idea what caused it, perhaps it's been too wet this year?

I have grown Ribes speciosum it was fine flowering well in spring. However after a few years it gradually died at this time of year. I tried a second plant in the same aspect west same result. It has layered and a new plant is forming will be sometime before it flowers I think.
It may have been to dry but I wasn't sure of the cause.
A friend grew it successfully for years together with Lobelia Tupa[which flowered really well]  Red Fuchsias amoungst other red flowering plants. To give a continuation of red.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
