I have recently taken in a 1 year old male Border Collie , super dog but he is killing my lawn bit by bit with his wee .

 Any suggestions please ,

  • It might take a bit of time but walking your dog at set times to completely empty himself will mean he is less likely to use the lawn.   When you think he might be ready for another wee, take him out.  My dog wouldn't ever waste it on the lawn because he liked to save weemails for other dogs.

I walk my dog at roughly the same times every day - my lawn is a dreadful mess. I've given up even trying

I've solved the problem of dog urine on the lawn..................get rid of the lawn! image

She's a lovely girl. Found abandoned on the streets of Berkshire and her last day in the pound and due to be put down the next day at only 18 months. That was 3 years ago. I'll be forever grateful to Gill from The Collie Spot for taking her in then coming to me.
I was determined to have another Border Collie (I lost my beloved Tia at nearly 15yrs) but for some reason I noticed a post from Gill one evening just before going to bed and sent an email saying I'd drive the 200+ miles and if she didn't take my hand off when we met I'd have her. I went to bed and thought 'what have I done!??' I only want a proper Border Collie - but it was fate and I truly wouldn't swap her for the world now.

And yes the best way is to get rid of the lawn. I'm planning on keeping some, but I'm going to widen a lot of the borders this autumn. Got to keep enough lawn to play ball for hours and hours though....

  • What a wonderful thing you did.  Girls are definitely more difficult.  My brother-in-law runs out with a watering can every time he spots his female dog using the lawn.  Sounds a bit tiring to me.

Pete8, you have certainly chosen an energetic breed, just keep a narrow strip, like a runway for the ball throwing, the straighter you can throw, the narrower the stripimage

Thanks pg. The lawn does eventually recover a bit, but I've given up any hopes of it returning to as it once was.

Throwing in a straight line is easy. But over the many years of dog wee the surface is sooo uneven the ball often bounces off at a 90° angle - usually into the flower beds, but she know's she's not allowed on them.

I do what you do Pottering girl with my Border Terrier & it's helped a lot, a bit of re-seeding and the lawn is recovering well. image Tougher when puppy training though. The whole watering can malarky soon got tiresome for me too.
