Garden centre bargains

I picked up a tray of 14 red spring cabbage for 99p and a pot of leeks for 50p at the garden centre yesterday. I have read up on the leeks - soak the contents of the whole pot to disentangle the roots then plant in holes, water but don't backfill
I'm less sure about the cabbage, mainly because the label says spring cabbage is planted in autumn. Now it's hardly flaming June up here, but it isn't autumn either. I can't imagine I should leave the cabbages in the tray till autumn so I intend just to plant them in firm ground and see what happens. Does that sound about right, and how long before we have some nice hearty red cabbage? Also any other growing tips as I haven't grown cabbage before, but I can't resist a bargain!
No longer newish but can't think of a new name so will remain forever newish.

Most odd. I've always known red cabbage as a vegetable to harvest over winter.
I'd plant them out, giving them plenty of room. Firm them well and look forward to braised red cabbage for Christmas.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I would plant them out keep them well watered, nothing to loose, for the price.
