Is it a tree or is it a weed?!

hi all!

I decided to try and tidy up back garden this summer, nothing major, just neaten up the grass edging and put a wooden boarder around. Now we have a massive tree in the front garden That we have to get cut back every two years or so as it grows quick and fast, every winter it drops small branches off and we have to clean up the street and driveways (not to bothered about this as it gives us privacy and shade)

In the back garden we have a smaller similar tree that's about 6ft+, this is a bit problematic as it as soon as we cut it back, within about 2 weeks it grows back even thicker. And now I have about 9/10 sprouts growing through the lawn which where never there before. One of the sprouts (which was a big one!) I dug up and found it was coming from a huge root that appears to be coming from the smaller tree.

Now I don't have this prolem in the Front garden at all so I'm worried that I have disturbed something in the back garden while digging up the edging and made things worst. I don't even know if it is a tree or a weed that's just getting too big for its boots. I've attached some photos so if anyone knows what this is called, how to get rid or even just help prevent it spreading any further I would be much appreciated!

I hope all this makes some sort of sense.

Thanks in advance!

It's a tree for sure. Could even be Tree of Heaven, Ailanthus Altissima because of the habit. The issue is, they do send up lots of suckers and some can be quite far from the site. I think it's no good trying to dig up. If it's in the grass, just keep mowing it down. You are doing the right thing by keeping the growth of the tree low. Weed killers will only kill the top part and sometimes even send roots to other directions. They are quite short lived trees if it helps.
