Roses like clay soil, so I expect that any will be happy in your soil.
dig in plenty of well rotted farmyard manure. Roses will be happy there

"peaty clay soil that drains slowly"
Sounds lovely. I've just got the clay bit.
Thank you all, well now I know roses will grow..have you any suggestions as to your favourite vairieties, a bush and a climber ..please ? .to start with..we have a small plot thta is just being developed from a muddy mossy patch of green ( can't call it lawn ) I have big plans in my head to turn it into some sort of magical trardis of a country garden . We are just putting in a wildlife pond with a shingle beach , a perennial bed, some raised beds for veggies a gravel garden , rockery etc..
Bearing in mind the majority of roses like sun, if you have mossy "grass" that suggests you dont get a lot of sun. I have rosa rugoas at the bottom of my garden, covering a fence, if we get heavy rain, they can have a few inches of water around their feet, and seem quite happy with that.
