With no image to look at I can only assume your cactus is either one of the three genera of epiphytic forest cacti ; Rhipsalis , Schlumbergera or Epiphyllum . All these appreciate warm lightly shaded conditions , PLENTY OF RAINWATER during their growing season , regular feeding is beneficial .

They often thrive during the summer months outside ; natural sunlight and rainfall promotes strong healthy plants .

PS :- purple foliage normally indicates damage from being exposed to too much light and probably not enough water . Try repotting into a fairly gritty medium and leaving in a shallow saucer of water if in full-sun. Apologies if this sounds confusing !

Many many thanks. This makes sense. It has been exposed to too much light. But has plenty of water.

Sounds like one of the Epiphyllums ; sometimes known as 'orchid cacti' ; these are a league apart from the true desert dwellers .

Try doing what I said , you may be pleasantly surprised .
