Can I pot this tree?

imageimage

Hi everyone. I have what I believe is an ornamental pear tree in the garden, but seem to have a problem with ants.

A few weeks ago after a bit of rain and wind the tree ended up on it's side, which I think is due to an ants nest at the root of the tree.

There were loads of ants at the root area and they are always on the tree leaves, and stem.

I would like to move the tree anyway, but can't move it to the site I wish to as I have to get rid of some tree stumps first.

My question is, could I put the tree in a pot until I am ready to replant it.

Mostly to save the tree, as I believe it isn't very healthy at the moment.

If I can, what size pot would I need and could I move it now?

Thanks for your advice

The ants will be farming aphids for their honeydew. Tip a couple of buckets of water around the tree roots to moisten the soil, which will make it less hospitable to ants. Put a band of something sticky round the trunk to stop the ants climbing up to tend their aphids and then spray the aphids (look under the leaves) with soapy water. If you still need to move the tree, do it in the autumn when it will suffer less from the disturbance.

Thanks for that. So Could I pot the tree in Early Autumn to replant hopefully next Spring.

I want to replant Where I have just had a massive fir tree cut down. And from what I've heard the soil becomes very acidic so it's best not to replant for a year.

The biggest pot you can possibly afford and practically get.

I have more trouble with ants in pots than in the soil.
