Pruning Jasmine Officinale

Kai_63Kai_63 Posts: 81

So I know that Jasmine Officinale doesn't really need pruning but I have a bit of a dilemma. I was growing it on a couple large trellis on the back wall and the idea was to train it along the side fences.

I hadn't realised how quickly it had grown at some point instead of growing on around the side fences it has grown into next door's garden. They have tons of flowers on their side and I have hardly any!

This is the first year I've seen flowers (and I would really like to see more flowers) after quite a bit of effort. I could ask them whether they'd bring most of the main shoots back to my side (which are growing from a thick harder main shoot) but this seems a bit petty.

So I wondered if I could just cut back the majority in late summer and retrain for next year? Will cutting the main shoot affect the plant at all?

Will this also affect flowering next year?

    Thank you!

It gets exactly the same amount of sun (sunny eastern wall) but I think it is more natural to grow straight across the back wall than around the corner onto my side fence. I thought I'd been keeping an eye on it but at some point this shoot must have had a growth spurt!

I have a similar situation: I had trellis put up to screen off "compost corner" and planted a honeysuckle to climb up it. Most of the flowers appear on the compost side!

I was thinking of asking my neighbours if I could plant various climbers and twining plants on their side of the garden walls, as I also find that the best of the flowers end up growing into their gardens, I was thinking if I could do this, then I would get the flowers.  image
