Roses and suckers

please can someone advise with roses when a sucker is a sucker or a new branch forming?

    If you can see the growth  "union", if it's coming below that, it's a sucker, above it, it's a new branch.

    the union is where the rose is grafted onto a rootstock for vigour, it's the rootstock which gives suckers.

    If the union is buried below ground, you're a lot less likely to have suckers, but folk ( MD for one ) used to say to plant them with the union above ground ( he's been told otherwise now )
