Plum Tree

I have ancient plum trees in my garden and each year they throw up new shoots through my lawn. The shoots are so strong they have penetrated a protective membrane beneath my deck and are growing through the gaps in the wood.
Is there anything I can do to stop this? Or is it a case of removing the trees to be free of this?
