How do i trim this back?

I am very new to this and need some help and advice on this bush/shrub please, how do i trim this monster back to a decent size, i dont know where to start or imagehow much? Do i take this right back to just branches with no leaves?? Im so confused please help.

    it looks large enough to crown raise at turn into a standard tree so you can plant underneath but retain the height.

    clamber underneath and remove the branches back to the trunk up to about 2 feet from the ground, then thin out the canopy by removing back to a spur in the branches.

    or you could reduce it back almost to a stump and it will regrow.

    or somewhere in between, choice is yours

    Can you take a more close up pic, I can see it's a variegated leaf, did it have flowers? 

    Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

    Could it be a pittosporum? A closer pic of the leaves would help.
