we have cut back hard a very large lonicera hedge I want to take cuttings to fill the gaps as some of it was so overgrown there are areas now missing. How can I do this easily without much fuss.

Easiest way is to peg down some of the lower branches into the soil in the gap which you want to fill. Keep watered and they root like that very easily.

They even root if you miss a couple of clippings when you're clearing up! image

If I want more I just strip the bottom leaves off my clippings and stick them in a pot. Easy peasy.

Agree. One of the easier shrubs to root.
