Queen Cox Apple Tree Help
in Fruit & veg
Hi,
I am very new to gardening but have inherited a very advanced garden. I am unsure how to keep up some of these plants and could use advice.
I have a queen cox apple tree that has round green fruit (maybe 1-2") right now. Some of the branches are very long and heavy and have curved and are on the ground.
Should I be removing fruit?
Should I use some 2x4s to prop up the sagging branches?
I think I should have thinned the fruit earlier, but will have to try and do that a little better next year.
Thanks,
Connie

I would remove the most of the fruit so you only have one apple per clump (pick the best looking- not damaged or largest to keep),
Then reduce the clumps so you have one clump per foot (30cm) along the branches.
it feels terrible doing it, but unless you want to support the branches with pole to stop them snapping it needs to be done. plus you still get a huge amount of fruit in the end.
then in autumn/winter you can reduce the branches by about half and thin the crown out so that next year you don't get such a massive crop.
