What are these, buds, eggs or some fungal infection

This may have been in the garden for a while but never noticed (or noticeable). Today suddenly we see it at multiple places in flower garden.
Trying to understand is it just ant hills type thing, fungus or much bigger problem like bugs, eggs etc.

Any help in identification would be appreciated. we are in Massachusetts

    Those are various types of fungi.  They are feeding on the organic matter (wood chip/ mulch etc) and will break it down and make it available as nutrients for your plants.

    Most of us are in the UK and here it is a perfectly normal occurrence in our gardens and nothing to worry about.

    I expect it is just the same in Massachusetts.
