Mullein Moth

I have had mulleins growing  in my garden for decades, but have never before come across the Mullein moth (a.k.a.Cucullia Verbasci; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mullein_moth)

I noticed its rather spectacular caterpillars munching away on a mullein plant yesterday.

Is it a pest? Is it rare? Why has it suddenly appeared in my garden? Should I be notifying any official organisation?

they're great aren't they. Eat a verbascum  before you can blink. But I garden for the wildlife that lives here and welcome them all. Not rare or notifable.
