Re-Potting Succulents

ERICS MUMERICS MUM Posts: 627

last year I inherited a Crassula Ovoid 'Jade plant' and a Schlumbergera 'Easter cactus' from my late Mum.

They desperately need repotting as they've been in the same soil for at least 3 years.

Im not sure what to use though, would John Innes No3 be too strong for them ?  Also I'm not sure if ordinary houseplant compost would suit, even though it's very light and the Crassula especially is very heavy.

thanks for your help as always.

  • JI3 with an equal volume of added sand and/or grit would be ideal.

Silly question time now !  What sort of sand ?   I've got some kiln-dried left over after having the drive power washes & re-sanded, would that do ?  Thanks.

  • I would use horticultural sand/grit. Your sand might be okay but I would want to know what is in it - it might have added chemicals to prevent weed growth, or something else that is undesirable.

And it will not be sharp sand - I think the kiln dried stuff for driveways is very fine. You need sharp sand or fine grit.
