CLEMATIS
hi I have a Clematis which is the type you cut back every year and then grows from ground level it is in a large pot 2 1/2 foot high and have had for 5 years. The problem is it grows only so high then for some reason starts to die back it is really healthy and each year grows a little higher ever year? It starts with a leaf goes limp sometimes low down and then it starts to die on that length then another length start leaves go brown and die? It is quite frustrating I bought some feed special for Clematis and used it last year but to no avail I don't water and it seems to thrive better this way but then it starts again any help please?

What type of compost are you using, also the ' special clematis feed ' you mention is probably high potash, you need to use a balanced 1 . 1 . 1. fertiliser for root growth, vegetative growth and flowering.
...................plus gallons and gallons and gallons of water.
Hi Richerd
Yes the feed is high potash I haven't fed this year yet as it seemed to have a detrimental effect last year when I fed early, I was also advised not to over water as it is in a pot I have grown Clematis in the garden in previous property and it thrives no problem but it was of the variety that grows from the old wood every year and not in pot?
thanks Pike.
Thirst is your problem. Stand your pot up on bricks or pot feet so excess water can drain and then give it a jolly good soak followed by regular watering. Better still, put it in the ground after giving it a good drink and then bury it a few inches lower than it was in the compost and backfill with good soil. Keep it watered till autumn when its roots should be able to find enough water on their own.
Thanks it's in a large pot 21/2 to 3 feet high so will soak well and feed and see what happens?
