Raspberries dying

Hi all
I have a newish raspberry patch, now in its second year. I have planted it with half Joan-J (an autumn variety) and half Glen Ample (a summer variety).
In the last 2 weeks a few of the Joan Js have started to die back right from the base. I'm not sure what's happening and how to prevent this spreading to the whole patch. Can anyone help?
