APPLE TREE LEAF PROBLEM

Can somebody please explain. Once again this year my apple trees are loosing the leaves, they turn yellow and then drop. Once all the leaves have dropped, the fruit drops towards the  end of August . I prune the trees in the Autumn and again in March. All the trees were pollinated this year and al show good crops of fruit, but I know from last year, that once the leaves drop, the fruit will also drop. I have thinned the crop to two fruits per spur. I have seen no evidence of bug infestations and I spray regularly with Bayer bug clear. The apple varieties are Egremont russet, Discovery, Bramley and two others, variety unknown. The soil here in Winchelsea Beach is  60% shingle and 40% soil

60% shingle! do you water regularly? as that's about a free draining soil at you're going to find anywhere in the UK even established shrubs and trees will need a helping hand in those soil conditions

Can you mulch the soul at all? Thinking well rotted horse manure to help stop the water draining so quickly.

  • Many thanks for the replies. I do water heavily every evening, foliage, fruits and tree roots and I have used loads of farmyard manure, I thought it may be overwatering, but I have tried underwatering and the results are always the same, leaf fall followed by fruit drop.  But will go back to watering heavily in these hot conditions. Oh, I forgot to mention, the trees are all grafted onto root stock and are five years old....
