Hi, I've got a two year old Acer, and the one half is dead wood but the other half of it is really healthy looking, is it alright to break off the dead branches, thanks
the question you need to be asking is why its half dead, because the other half could die as easily, do you water it well (Acers like being damp but not wet) where is it located, is it too sunny, too windy, too hot?
I lots a chunk of my beautiful Acer Katsura to Verticillium wilt that was diagnosed by Hortum-Create on this forum. The rest of the tree doesn't look too bad but sadly the whole tree will die in the not too distant future. RHS recommends grassing over the area and leave it for 15 years
As th says above, best to try and establish what caused the die-back in the first place.
Be careful pruning acers this time of year as they do bleed if pruned when not dormant.

dead branches can be cut off anything, I would make a clean cut, back to healthy wood, rather than breaking off. Don't leave stumps.
