Best houseplant for south facing window

NotyalcaNotyalca Posts: 134

I am after a bigger houseplant I can keep on the floor - my kitchen diner has a big window / patio door wall, it gets sun the entire day - basically my kitchen is a greenhouse. It's very hot and humid And I want a nice tall houseplant for in the window so I need something that will take direct hot sun all day!

Anyone any ideas?

The RHS has this list of plants - https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=947 but you could modify the situation to soften direct sun by hanging sheer curtains to filter the light a bit and prevent sunburn.  You'd also need to be very careful about adequate watering without drowning.

I have a hibiscus sinensis which is very happy in a south facing window but the sun is very high and teh walls very thick so it doesn't get much direct sun at this time of year but revels in it from lat summer thru to mid spring.  I have to keep pinching it back to stop it becoming huge.  I also need to water it every 2 days at the mo.

Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

how about a Sarracenia flava, bonus is that this thing eats flies and wasps!

all you have to do is keep it sat in about 1 - 2 inches of water and it'll take all the heat and sun you can give it!

    Citrus fruits?

Anthurium. My mother has a huge one in a south-facing porch.

I think it's a bit sinister-looking but it is much admired by her less-squeamish visitors.

    In London. Keen but lazy.

citrus dont like to be iside in the summer (you ask) monty, they dont like heat, direct sun or dry air.  I have a south facing porch, the only thing that survives in teir are cacti.I have read that some pelargoniums would be happy there.
