HI,are you allowed to take tadpoles from the wild,I put in s wildlife pond in about two years ago.Although the pond has matured,I've not seen anyvsign of any frogs I was hoping to tempt into it.Ive go plenty of water snails and water beetles, the problem is I live in the middle of a large housing estate.I thought about kidnapping tadpoles but didn't know if it's legal.
Dear Fingers, As far as I know there is no law against taking frogspawn from the wild, but it isn't really in the spirit of wildlife gardening. You're not really supporting wildlife unless you leave it wild. If your pond is the only one for miles around, they're not going to use it because they're never going to find it. If you import them as spawn or tadpoles, and your pond doesn't suit them for any reason, they have nowhere else to go. You wouldn't take eggs from a wild bird's nest and hand-rear them just for fun, would you?
I set up a wildlife pond three years ago, and apart from two sightings of a newt, it's only been colonised by invertebrates, but they're interesting enough. There's a gull that likes to swim in it, and smaller birds drink and bathe on a platform I've constructed just below the surface.
Cheers josusa, you got a pint about frogs not liking my pond, and there are plenty of wild life ponds around the edge of the estate,so I'll take your advise and leave the spawn alone,I can live in hope on day they might find my pond, and I do get so much pleasure watch all the bird come to drink and bath in it,
