Peonies

Hi.

I have a red peony that has flowered well for many years. This year there are no flowers but the leaves look healthy. The plant hasn't been moved.

Any ideas why this has happened?

Could it be low on food?  If you haven't been feeding it, you could try feeding it with some specialist peony food or good old fish, blood and bone.  It was also a very dry start to the year so may have been a bit short of water at the critical stage when it was forming buds.

I agree with Bob. There was also a very cold spell at the time the buds will have been growing and this may have frosted the buds.

I have P. Sarah Bernhart and find her very fickle, some years she just decides not to perform. This year I have a single flower, but it is about 9 inches in diameter.

I don't thnk you have to worry too much. Peonies are very temperamental. It's been too cold at the spring and late spring stage. I have visited gardens where there are very well established Peonies, and only saw 3-4 buds amongst a huge mass of green leaves.

  • Thanks everyone.

  • Patience. We had a peony that didn't flower for 4 years, this year it has been magnificent.
